Rollerblading September 29, 2006

Yes. I’m making another attempt at getting regular exercise. We’ll see how this one turns out.

I’ve been rollerblading 2 and 1/2 times so far! How, you may ask, does one 1/2 rollerblade? It was a beautiful sunny morning. Perfect for rollerblading! I, however, having just eaten a bowl of Raisin Bran and drunk a huge glass of orange juice, was not quite up to the challenge. The concrete street is bumpy until the bike path, and by the time I made it to the bike path, I was ready to puke. So I sat on the curb for five minutes, drank some water, and slowly rolled back home. That was my 1/2 of a rollerblade excursion.

Anyways, my rollerblading looks like a cross between a penguin’s walk and the Tin Man’s dance.

One bright note on Wednesday September 16, 2006

On Wednesday, after the shootings, I saw two students standing in the rain holding up large cardboard signs that said “Dawson Students” with an arrow directing them to the theatre at Concordia University where they could get care and counselling. Thos two students unselfishly stood there in the dripping rain that afternoon, disregarding their own comfort to help frightened Dawson students. They put themselves aside, their time, their schedule and their fear. It was one encouraging image in that mess.

Is Pepsi getting a little too much Jazz? September 16, 2006

I tried one of the new Pepsi Jazz flavours tonight. Strawberries and cream. I thought I was buying a rootbeer because the wrapper was reddish brown. Silly me. My experience can be summarized in one word, albeit a made-up one: “Bleurk!”

Here’s what an interesting food review blogger thought.

I think they’re trying to quench our incessant thirst for novelty.  But they’re running out of ideas.

Shooting at Dawson College September 13, 2006

Students are massed in front of the few TV screens broadcasting news on the Concordia campus downtown. But there is no sound on the TVs, so all we can find out is what the scrolling newsbriefs state: “Shooting at Dawson College.” Busloads of Dawson students have been evacuated to Concordia and the students wander, everyone on a cellphone, telling their story. They try to reach their family and friends. The rumors fly. “One person died!” “How many are dead? How many are injured?” “They caught one of the shooters. One is still at large.” “I don’t want to go back to class.” “Can we pray?” I’m sure much of the rumors are exaggerated. But still.

Cyberpresse has the most information online. Actually, it’s the only information I’ve found online. (Sorry it’s only in French) So far, there are 13 wounded, 8 in critical condition. The shooters fired shots at people in the Dawson cafeteria, the third floor, outside the college and also apparently in Alexis-Nihon mall. These are places I know. I’ve walked through that mall many times. You never believe hate can strike so close to home. Please pray for those involved.

The green line of the metro has been shut down between McGill and Lionel-Groulx. I hope it reopens sometime this evening, so I can get home.

98 years old! September 13, 2006

Have you ever wondered how old you would be if you lived on another planet? Well, according to this website I will be turning 98 in Mercurian years on September 20! The ages vary wildly from planet to planet, as on Jupiter I am not yet 2 years old. The site explains how this is possible but it’s fun to just go see when your next birthday is on another world.

Maybe I should have a Mercurian birthday party on September 20. Everybody could wear red and we could eat…um…Mexican…because it’s very hot there?

The mother of all tomatoes September 9, 2006

Can you believe this thing grew in our tiny backyard garden? Our tomatoes are huge! My dad says he didn’t use any fertilizer but I’m scared. Tomatoes this big are not normal. Are they?

I don’t know how I feel about this. I purchased by monthly bus pass and, for the first time, it’s got an ad on it. I know the STM needs more money, but sheesh! Does advertizing have to invade every aspect of our lives?

Bus stop September 5, 2006

I get a greedy shot of pleasure out of crushing the half-smoked cigarettes that litter the pavement at the bus terminus. I walk toward my bus, purposely scuffing my feet, aiming for the plump, unfinished cigarettes that the smokers reluctantly dropped in their hurry to catch the previous bus. I get a small satisfied kick out of striking one solidly with the toe of my shoe. Its dry orange tobacco spills out like scattered gold dust and, in one movement, I grind it into the concrete. Its tattered paper envelope flutters, empty.
