The butterflies…th-th-they’re attacking! August 30, 2006

I found out today that a proper term for a group of butterflies is a “rabble.” This is odd since a rabble is probably the farthest thing from our minds when we see a bunch of butterflies. “A tumultuous crowd? A mob? A group of persons regarded with contempt?” Two other words you can use are “swarm” and, my personal favourite, “kaleidoscope.” Isn’t that a silly name for a group of insects? I can just see the butterfly hunter, peering through his binoculars as he crawls on his hands and knees through the Amazon jungle. “Crikey!” cries he, “There goes a kaleidoscope of butterflies!”

Wow. I’ve had this link in my blogroll for months without returning to read the blog. Now I know why I put it there. Read this post that celebrates some great things going on in Greensboro. Though it’s a small town compared to Montreal, people without homes are everywhere. Read Chosen Fast if you’ve ever wondered how you could make a difference to the homeless. The Night Watch’s effort are inspiring.
Sickie August 30, 2006

Hey! I’ve been a sickie for the last 4 days or so. Woke up Saturday with a killer sore throat. Went to the doctor on Monday and it turns out it was strep throat. Yeck.
So I’ve spent the last 4 days in my PJs, sleeping and doing my own movie marathon. This included watching–deep breath–Little Women, The Princess Bride, The Incredibles, Pirates of the Carribbean I, Pride and Prejudice, Memento and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (once in English and once in Spanish), plus various special features, director’s commentaries, ad infinitum. I not sure about that last Latin phrase, I think I made it up, but it sounds good. Maybe ad nauseum too.
The rest of the time, I played some good old arcade games over at Isara.
I’m feeling better now.
Sadly, I can’t really wear this… August 24, 2006

Threadless just put up a new tshirt called “Sticks of Shame” (designed by Candace Okamura). By the way, how would you spell Tshirt? T-shirt, t-shirt, teeshirt, tee shirt…ARG! Dictionary.com says “T-shirt,” also spelled tee-shirt (which I had never dreamed of) and also called T or tee.
Here’s a picture of the tee design:

If you can’t read the small text, it says:
“Translation: I can’t use chopsticks. Because of this MY FACE BURNS WITH SHAME!!! Can I please have a fork?”
This would be such a funny shirt to wear to Asian restaurants! But I won’t because I’d be afraid they’d take away my chopsticks and give me a fork. And I love using chopsticks! It’s like a wonderful toy. I’m easily amused.
“Like a little child.
I am easily amused.
Take not my chopsticks.”

My parents bought a pair of spankin’ new couches this week. In this commemorative music video, we hang out for a last time with our comfortable old couches.
Alas! The supplanters have arrived all too soon. We have discovered they have the exact firmness and texture as the benches doctors make you sit on while they listen to your lungs with a cold stethoscope. All that is lacking is the crinkly white paper between the couch and your rear.
I don’t have much to say today… August 16, 2006

…it’s my day off. I’m not thinking much today. I am in the midst of cleaning my room. Again. And I am pausing to blog a bit.
Each time I clean my room, I discover, underneath a mound of clothes, that rubberband ball I started a while ago. And I add a few rubberbands. It doesn’t seem to be getting larger very quickly. It is currently about the size of a tennis ball.
My arms are sore today because I went rockclimbing again last night. I happened to have my camera along and so got a few pictures. This is a little “cave” to practice in. It is not very high and if you fall there’s big mattresses, so it’s fun. I seriously was almost on the ceiling! Next time…
After rockclimbing, I randomly went to Chapters (I was actually searching for food) and ended up buying a cute copy of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen. It’s not among the most well-known of Austen’s novels. But I finished it this afternoon and enjoyed it very much. There were bits that made me smile because it really is funny. She wrote it to make fun of the popular “Gothic novels” of her time, where the heroine was always beautiful and always swooning, as she explored secret staircases, was sought after by a handsome stranger, or was startled by a scary skeletons. Well, if you’d like to read it yourself, there’s an online copy here.
I should get back to cleaning my room.
